Fiber-on-Chip: Digital Emulation of Channel Impairments for Real-Time DSP Evaluation

We describe the Fiber-on-Chip (FoC) approach to verification of digital signal processing (DSP) circuits, where models a fiber-optic communication system are implemented in same hardware as DSP under test. The can enable cost-effective long-term evaluations without need for complex optical-electronic testbeds with high-speed interfaces, shortening time and enabling deep bit-error rate evaluations. Our FoC currently contains model transmitter generating pseudo-random bitstream channel additive white Gaussian noise, phase noise polarization-mode dispersion. In addition, features real-time control parameters, using low-speed autonomous analysis, which us batch multiple unsupervised emulations on hardware. target both field-programmable gate arrays, fast evaluation fixed-point logic, application-specific integrated accurate power dissipation measurements.
